Eccentric Frames – Tamil version “open panna” – Winner Amazon Pen to Publish Award 2021

Araathu is a prominent and widely read author among the current writers in Tamil. He steers clear of the beaten track and almost all of his writing is experimental. He enjoys introducing new themes, structures, language, and concepts in his writing. He has dared to traverse territories hitherto unexplored by any writer in the world.

He is a multifaceted writer who has published short story collections, essays, poetry and novels. He also writes regularly in dailies and weeklies. He also works as a consultant to the film industry.

His very first book Symphonies of Suicide: Tales in Micro-fiction is itself a highly experimental piece and can be considered a first in world literature.

    —————–

The protagonist Sreenivasan does not set out to become a film director.Yet life thrusts him in this direction. This rather unexpected journey uncovers the hidden artist and dreamer within him.

As the novel unfolds, we get to meet both the genius who becomes a runaway success overnight as well as the eccentric. Filmdom is a world of fantasy, much removed from the starkness of an insane world. His forays into the mundane world are classic examples of postmodernism as they are absurd and comic.

The novel also explores his encounters with the women who are drawn to him. His artistry and eccentricity are the qualities that draw women to him, but it is these very same qualities that become the bane that mars his relationships, as the women in his life seek to divest him of his artistry and force him into the mould of a common man.

The novel throws light on the stark, brutal side of show business; it is also delightfully comical.

This book beautifully summarises the men-women relationship conflict both rationally and satirically
    from a man’s perspective.

Araathu writes daringly about the crazy atrocities women do in the name of ‘love’ and how stupid these are in the eyes of men
in a very real, genuine and fair manner that readers can totally relate to it.

A brave endeavor. The book will leave you laughing, unlearing and of course, having fun.

The Gambler follows the gripping journey of Alexei Ivanovich, a young tutor entangled in a web of obsession, desire, and self-destruction. Set against the backdrop of a European spa town, Alexei finds himself drawn into the feverish world of roulette, where each spin fuels his addictive thrill and desperate hope for wealth. As he becomes entrapped in the dark allure of gambling, his tumultuous love for Polina, a woman as elusive as his fortunes, pushes him to the brink. Dostoevsky’s masterful exploration of human weakness and compulsion makes this novel an unforgettable portrayal of risk, passion, and fate.

Fyodor Dostoevsky, the author of The Gambler, is one of Russia’s most influential literary figures and a pioneer of psychological realism. Born in 1821 in Moscow, Dostoevsky’s life was marked by hardship, including imprisonment in Siberia, financial struggles, and an ongoing battle with epilepsy and gambling addiction. These personal experiences deeply influenced his writing, allowing him to explore complex themes of human suffering, morality, and inner turmoil with unparalleled insight. Known for his philosophical depth and character-driven narratives, Dostoevsky’s works, including Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, and Notes from Underground, delve into the darkest recesses of the human psyche and moral dilemmas. The Gambler, a semi-autobiographical novel, reflects his own struggles with gambling, making it a powerful, introspective look at addiction and its psychological toll. Dostoevsky’s legacy endures as his work continues to resonate with readers, offering profound reflections on human nature and the existential questions of life.
